HIST 594 Turkish Social and Political Thought, 1839-1914 Select Term:
A study of the foundations of political thought in the Ottoman empire and modern Turkey. The first part of the course focuses both on continuities with the earlier "Islamicate" discourse, and on the crucial break with tradition initiated during the Tanzimat. Over the second part of the course, some key representatives of post- 1908 currents of thought such as liberalism, nationalism or feminism will also be investigated.
